BIO!
~DJ Beanz aka "Holla at Beanz"~ DJ Beanz is originally from the North Shore of Massachusetts. Back in Boston, she had immersed herself in hip-hop from an early age, studying greats such as Grand Master Flash, Roc Raida, and Tony Touch. Then in ‘99 she had an opportunity to move to Florida, taking a job promoting shows. And while hip-hop was what she knew, being in Florida, there was a large drum and bass scene and she took the opportunity during her free time to mess around on the turntables and essentially teach herself how to DJ. She would get her chance when, as she puts it, she “was thrown out there in front of a crowd where no one was dancing.” Well, they weren’t dancing, but by the time she looked up as her set was ending, everyone was on their feet moving and she knew she’d found her calling. Fast-forward 3-4 years later Beanz moved to the DC/MD/VA area (Better known now as "The DMV"). It came as no surprise that she gravitated towards the music scene after moving here. Hanging around in some of the lounges and open mics allowed her to hone her craft and also meet some of the regional celebrities of the underground. Since then DJ Beanz has been doing shows in clubs up and down the East Coast, working with Indies and majors nationwide. She is an active tour, radio, club, mixtape DJ/Host and print model. DJ Beanz separates herself from other female DJs by being an avid supporter of the "Indie" Hip-Hop scene and a true record breaker "Trying To Keep REAL hip-hop alive", and working to become a master of the craft. As her mixtape catalog continues to expand you can also check out DJ Beanz "Female Take Over" mixshow on www.focusonthedj.com, also accessible from Sprint, Verizon, Alltel, AT&T and Worldwide Cellular mobile devices. INTERVIEW!
MB.COM: WHAT MAKES YOUR DJ QUALITY OF PERFORMANCE DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER DJ'S PERFORMANCE? BEANZ: I never stop practicing, growing & developing different styles. I will say what sets my performance aside from "DJs" nowdays is that I still actually use turntables & strive to master the craft of turntablism. I keep my mixes raw and real. Aside from the club my mixtapes and radio shows stay versatile with everything from Indie music to old school. I also don't know how many other DJs spin their club sets in stilettos lol. MB.COM: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF BEING A DJ? BEANZ: I'm not sure how I would classify myself, I started as a Drum & Bass/Jungle DJ just in the clubs, but I do a lot more radio and mixtapes now, primarily hip hop. I would consider myself a record breaker, I'm trying to keep the craft of the REAL DJ alive and spread real hip hop/music in general in peoples ears. MB.COM: WHAT DOES DJ BEANZ HAVE LINED UP FOR 2011? WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK FORWARD TO? BEANZ: Oh man....2011 is going to be bananas! I have some things lined up that I cant quite release yet ;) Spill The Beanz Radio is taking off heavy on 3 different online stations including MIX1620 AM in New Jersey. Some possible touring in the summer and I'll be hitting you heavy with the mixtapes. I'm HOPING to be nominated for a Justos lol. MB.COM: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES? BEANZ: Well, music is my life so I spend the majority of my time going through music, my hobby kind of developed into my career. Other than that I love basketball (GO CELTICS) and playstation lol. I also love to travel so when I find time for myself I takespontaneous trips. MB.COM: HOW DO YOU DEFINE AN ARTIST? BEANZ: An artist to me is someone who can show versatility, uniqueness and intelligence. MB.COM: HOW DO YOU DEFINE MUSIC? BEANZ: In the words of K-Beta "Music is the metaphor for medicine". Music is a form of self expression and for me stress relief. I have "Music Is Life" tatted on my left foot. I could go on this topic for days, lol. But to me, there is no better feeling than the chills i get from an amazing song, one of those that just hits you hard so you fiend for it. I'm an addict, music is my lifeline lol. MB.COM: WHO OR WHAT HAS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL IMPAC ON DJ BEANZ LIFE? BEANZ: My supporters that show appreciation and love to my movement. It's the fans I have that give me that extra motivation to keep my mixes hot. They are the ones nominating and voting for me. I love the reaction from the hip hop heads after my shows. The artists that are keeping hip hop alive and grinding to their fullest. My mentor DJ Ykcor, if it weren't for him and a few others I wouldn't have come as far as I have. MB.COM: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE INDUSTRY TODAY? MB.COM: Ugh...the industry. Lol, I don't know if you want to get me started on this! I will admit there are a lot of fresh voices in the game that I'm really diggin along with many of the OGs keeping it alive. BUT "Hip Hop" is definitely evolving into something laughable with people like Waka Flocka and Nicki Minaj running the game, what happened to being a lyricist? Things are different and I guess everyone has their own flavor lol but what the industry considers marketable nowadays is NOT mine. MB.COM: WHO IN THE INDUSTRY THAT YOU HAVE NOT WORKED WITH THAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLAB WITH? BEANZ: Red Cafe, Jada Kiss and Joe Budden. They're artists to me that have always stayed lyrical and consistent with the heat and it would be amazing to work with them. And I'd probably give my right nipple to do a tape with Funk Flex or Green Lantern....I'm just saying.... MB.COM: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO NEW UP & COMING ARTIST THAT ARE TRYING TO BREAK RECORDS IN THIS INDUSTRY? BEANZ: 1st and foremost ask yourself what sets you aside from other artists. Get registered for publishing (BMI/ASCAP etc), learn how to properly label tracks, keep the DJ happy and don't burn bridges lol. Also keep in mind you won't accomplish anything sitting on your booty, you've got to get up and grind! INVEST IN YOUR CAREER!!! ![]() INTERVIEWED & Edited By: MS.
